TUCSON, AZ — A missing elderly woman, a reported ransom demand, and a growing sense of urgency have placed the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show anchor Savannah Guthrie, under intense national scrutiny.
Former FBI agents say the limited details released so far point to a set of circumstances that are rare in modern criminal investigations.
Katherine Schweit, a former FBI agent who once led a high-profile kidnapping investigation, said the case bears similarities to a crime she worked on more than two decades ago involving an elderly grandmother abducted for ransom.
In that earlier case, the victim was taken during the night and later found alive. Investigators ultimately arrested a suspect who was familiar with the family and motivated by financial gain.
Schweit said those elements may offer important context as investigators search for Nancy Guthrie.
According to Schweit and other former agents, kidnappings involving elderly victims and ransom demands are extremely uncommon today. When they do occur, perpetrators often have prior knowledge of the victim, the household, or the family’s financial situation.
They added that investigators are likely focused on determining whether any ransom communications are authentic, a task made more complex by modern digital tools that allow criminals to disguise their identities.
A Family Plea as the Search Continues
In a video posted on social media on February 7, Savannah Guthrie said her family is prepared to meet the demands of whoever is holding her mother.
“We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her,” she said. “This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
Former agents say such public statements are often made with the guidance of law enforcement and may be intended to keep communication open while authorities work behind the scenes.
A High-Profile Kidnapping in the Digital Age
Schweit described true ransom kidnappings as rare in modern times, comparing them to historic cases that shaped early FBI investigations.
Today, most abductions are linked to domestic disputes, human trafficking, or mental health crises. Crimes involving ransom demands and prominent families are far less common but draw intense public attention.
Lance Leising, another former FBI agent, said cases like this stand out because they are so unusual.
“These are the kinds of crimes people associate with movies,” he said. “You rarely see them unfold in real life, and when they do, it’s devastating for the family and terrifying for the victim.”
Authorities have not released details about potential suspects and say the investigation remains active as they work to locate Nancy Guthrie safely.
