U.S.–Iran Talks in Oman Aim to Ease Tensions and Prevent Regional War
Muscat, Oman – U.S. and Iranian negotiators held indirect talks in Oman on February 6 as part of renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent a military confrontation that could destabilize the world.
The discussions, mediated by Oman in the capital Muscat, represent the most serious attempt in months to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran. Although the talks were indirect, they could open the door to the first direct U.S.–Iran engagement since June, when U.S. airstrikes targeted Iran’s key nuclear facilities during a brief but intense regional conflict involving Israel.
Iranian state media confirmed that the talks had concluded later in the day. The White House offered no immediate comment, but Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, described the meeting as a constructive beginning.
U.S. Military Buildup Raises Stakes
The diplomatic talks come amid a significant U.S. military buildup near Iran. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of an aircraft carrier, warships, fighter jets, surveillance drones, and advanced missile-defense systems to the region.
The show of force underscores the urgency of the Oman negotiations, as both sides attempt to balance pressure with diplomacy.
What the United States Is Demanding From Iran
A central issue in the U.S.–Iran talks is Iran’s nuclear program. Washington is demanding that Iran fully halt nuclear enrichment and dismantle its stockpile of enriched uranium.
The U.S. has also signaled it wants to expand negotiations to include Iran’s ballistic missile program and regional influence.
Iran Pushes for Sanctions Relief
Iran has demanded the lifting of U.S. economic sanctions that were reimposed in 2018 after the United States withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal.
Foreign Minister Araghchi emphasized that Iran seeks diplomacy focused strictly on nuclear issues.
Can the Oman Talks Prevent War?
While major disagreements remain, analysts say even limited progress could reduce the immediate risk of conflict shaping global news.
Oman described the talks as groundwork for future negotiations aimed at regional stability.
